These following sketches were scribbled quickly, blind-contour-like, in the classroom where I was a testing proctor. Remember that these horrible drawings, however hard they are to look at, serve a purpose: they will help you loosen up and practice focusing on what you actually see rather than reinterpreting what you see. You can even add color to them afterward, with watercolor.
TEN-MINUTE DRAWINGS
Once you have built that trust and loosened up a little, you will be more comfortable drawing against the clock. Here is another example of the same kind of subject (students’ footwear) but treated differently. Without the blind contour to warm me up, it might not have gone well. Why are drawing shoes such a fun exercise? First, you know people are bound to move, so it’s a race against the clock. Second, you see footwear in angles you are not able to see if the shoe just sits empty on the floor. Third, you don’t raise too much suspicion while drawing them. I have grown to like statewide-testing week just so I can draw what students wear on their feet. Think of all the times you might be sitting somewhere in the vicinity of people—at a coffee shop, in a waiting room or on the subway—there will always be shoes and legs to sketch. During the statewide testing, students’ movements didn’t allow for much more than a few minutes of sketching at a time.
